Nagavara Ramarao Narayana Murthy (born 20 August 1946) is an Indian industrialist, software engineer, and philanthropist. He is the co-founder of Infosys, one of India’s largest IT services companies, and is widely regarded as a pioneer of the Indian information technology industry.[1] Under his leadership, Infosys became a global IT powerhouse and helped shape India’s role in the global software services market.[2]

Early Life and Education

Narayana Murthy was born in Sidlaghatta, Mysore State, India (now Karnataka). He completed his Bachelor of Engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore.[3] Later, he earned a Master’s degree in Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.[4]

Career

Murthy started his career as a chief systems programmer at IIM Ahmedabad. In 1981, he co-founded Infosys Technologies Limited with six other software professionals.[5] As the CEO and chairman, he led the company to become one of the most respected and successful IT firms in India and globally.[6] Infosys was the first Indian company to be listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange.[7]

Murthy is credited with promoting transparency, good corporate governance, and innovation in the Indian IT sector.[8] He retired as chairman of Infosys in 2011 but continues to serve as chairman emeritus.[9]

Philanthropy
